Abaarso School of Science and Technology is a College of Science and Technology of great excellence. It is situated 18 kilometres from Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, a region in the north of Somalia that is independent but that still isn’t recognized internationally as a sovereign state. The college was founded by Jonathan Starr, a US citizen. About 250 of some of the most brilliant students in the region study and live here. The success of Abaarso School consists of training children with no economic means. Somaliland does not have an educational system that is equivalent and hence can be approved by other countries. The college gives them the opportunity to obtain scholarships to study in prestigious universities in the West such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Georgetown University and Oberlin College.
In this documentary made for ‘Learning World’, a Euronews programme, we speak with the management and to the students who give us their opinion of the academic method in use, life in the campus and the magnificent future opportunities it avails to Somaliland youth.
